Nursery Autumn 2020-21

Welcome To Nursery!

Welcome to Nursery! We have all enjoyed our first week in Nursery and we have all had lots of fun. We have been exploring our new outdoor and indoor environments as well as learning routines and making lots of new friends. We have all settled in very well and are having so much fun! Take a look at the activities we have been taking part in this week.

We Love ICT!

During our first lesson of ICT, with Reception, we discussed what technology is and learnt about the different types of technology we have in the world. We now recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. We learnt that technology is selected and used for particular purposes and discussed the importance of technology to different people in their jobs - such as vets, doctors, builders and teachers. We now understand how important technology is to people in their everyday lives.
After our discussion, we then got to work in groups to control a programmable floor robot - A Bee-Bot. We entered instructions in order to move it forward or backward in 15 cm steps or to turn right or left. When we pressed the <Go> button, the robot moved as instructed.

Black History Month!

Throughout October, we have taken part in some fun activities in order to celebrate Black History Month. Our theme was Africa. We started off the celebrations by talking about Africa - the animals there, the climate and what African schools, villages and clothes look like. We then read Handa's suprise - a story about a young African girl who collects fruit to take to her best friend. After reading Handa's suprise we learnt all about African fruit and the different types of fruit that come from Africa. We had a taster session in which we tasted; papaya, avocado pear, mango, pineapple, passionfruit, banana, orange, guava and tangerine.
In PE, we took part in some African dancing - and followed an African lady step by step as she taught us some African dance moves. We enjoyed shaking our hips and bouncing around to the beat.
In Music we listened and danced to some African music. We learnt about instruments played in African music and identified these instruments as we listened to some African songs. We also talked about different types of music from different parts of Africa and discussed what was the same/different about the music from the different areas.
In our creative area we have been making some African necklaces and we have also painted some African sunsets and added some African animal silhouettes.

We cannot wait to go back every Friday morning throughout our time in Nursery!

Chatter, Chatter, Chatter

We pretended to explore all of the different equipment in the park with our friend using movements to represent each piece of equipment. After this we played a team game where we had to pass two hoops around the giant circle. We had to work as a team and communicate to get the hoop around the circle without letting go of our friends. PE - Witches and Wizards

Today in PE we had to pretend that were were witches and wizards wearing big pointy hats. We had to climb on our magic broom and then fly around the room. We had to fly high and low and in different directions. We also had to fly around making sure that we were not touching anyone else. When Miss Clark had cast the 'freeze spell', we all had to freeze in our own space. Then we had to imagine that we were wizards wearing big long cloaks. Our wand had to lead us around the room. We had to stand still still and point our wand into a space in the room, then quickly run to that space, stopping on arrival and starting again.
Next, we had to form a small group in some space on the floor. We were going to make a magic potion. We suggested making a potion to turn Miss Forrest into a frog! We had to stand around our cauldrons and complete the following actions; squash the ingredients by jumping up and down, help stir the potion by running around in a circle in one direction and then the other, and we had to pretend to see the potion bubble as we wiggled our fingers in the middle of the cauldron and ran on the spot as fast as we could. On Miss Clark's command (shouting pop and clapping her hands) we had to run to a spade and quickly freeze as if the potion has exploded.
We finished the lesson by playing cauldrons. We had to move freely around the hall area until Miss Clark shouted 'Hocus Pocus!' When she shouted this we had to quickly run into a cauldron and stand still.

When we went to the ICT suite, with Miss Clark and Miss Forrest, we learned the importance of staying safe whilst using a computer. We discussed that we should never touch any wires or plugs and that when we are sitting the computer we have to keep our legs still and our feet flat on the floor. We learned about the different parts of the computer including the monitor, screen, keyboard and mouse. We had a go at logging onto the computer using our own details and then our teachers showed us how to get onto Purple Mash. We then explored Mini Mash independently in order to see what we were going to be accessing within our future ICT lessons.

PE - Travelling and Catching

In PE this week we talked about the importance of stretching and we copied Miss Clark as we stretched all of our bodies after our warm up. We then got into groups of 3 and practiced throwing and catching a bean bag to each other. We had to remember to say the person's name who we were throwing the bean bag to before we threw it. When we were receiving the bean bag we had to be ready to catch it. After we practiced our catching, we got into a line and investigate how we could move across the hall in different ways. We came up with lots of ways including; walking, running, hopping, jumping, skipping and crawling.

We were very good at copying the dance moves and had lots of fun!

PE - Slides and Monkey Bars

Our topic in PE this half term is 'In The Park'. Today we discussed the different things which we can access in park and demonstrated - with actions -  how you would use them. We then pretended to slide down the slide to the music. We had to listen for the six beats and this is when we walked up the steps of the slide. When we reached the top, we slid down with our hands in the air shouting, "weeeee."
After going down the slide, we then pretended to jump up onto the monkey bars and swing across them as the monkey bars music played. When the music paused for a few seconds, we had to change direction and swing a different way.

PE - Swings

As our topic is 'In The Park' for this half term we were focusing on swings today. We recapped pretending to go down slide to the music. After going down the slide, we recapped swinging across the monkey bars to the monkey bar music. After, we made up an action to show how we would swing on the swings in the park. We enjoyed swinging around the hall to the music.

We have also made our own mehndi hands, diya lamps and rangoli patterns. We have shown an excellent understanding of Diwali and can share some interesting facts about it.

Anti-Bullying Week 2020
United Against Bullying!

This week, during Anti-Bullying Week, we have been raising awareness about bullying. During which we learnt about bullying and how to deal with it. This year, Anti-Bullying Week took place from the 16th to the 20th November. Anti-Bullying Week has a different theme each year. This year’s theme was ‘United Against Bullying.’
On Monday 16th, our school took part in an Odd Socks Day. By wearing odd socks, we were raising awareness of our opinions that  it is okay to be different.
During Anti-Bullying Week, have also listened to and shared stories of Elmer the elephant (who was different to the other elephants) and we have also have also listened to and spoke about the hidden message in the story 'Giraffes Can't Dance'. We have enjoyed making patterns and practicing our pencil control with Elmer worksheets.
In PE we have played some team work games with the parachute in order to celebrate Anti-Bullying Week. We played a range of fun games using the parachute including, popcorn-with some soft balls and tag. We also enjoyed making a giant mushroom with the parachute. We worked very well as a team, communicating well together and we all had lots of fun! We have also taken part in another team work activity in PE—where we had to work together to move the hula hoop around the group without letting go of each others hands.
On Thursday during PSHE, we have created a friendship web discussing what it means to be a good friend and how we can all be a good friend. We have also looked at relationships in PSHE using our 5R’s elephant as a mascot for good, positive relationships and have made a friendship web by giving examples of how we can be a good friend. Lastly we have completed a sorting activity on the IWB around Anti-Bullying - we sorted good friend and not a good friend scenarios into the right sides of the table to show our understand of good, positive relationships.

Sponsored Run With Santa

On the morning of Thursday 3rd December, we completed a sponsored run with Santa. We dressed up with our Christmas accessories and completed a total of 6 laps around the KS2 yard alongside Reception. We were very good at running and raised a lot of money to go towards our Christmas Virtual Pantomime.

Meeting Santa!

Today, during our Christmas party, Santa came to visit us. He sat with us and we got to tell him what we would like him to bring us on Christmas Eve. We then took our turn to go up and shake his hand and receive a present from him. We were all very excited and loved meeting Santa!

PE - Pirates! Ahoy Matey!

Todays lesson was all about being pirates! We warmed up by moving around the room in a range of ways - to get our bodies ready for exercise. Then we played 'Catch The Captain'. Miss Clark had to choose one child to be the Captain, and they started at the opposite end of the hall. The rest of the children asked the captain "Whats the time Captain?" Captain calls out a time of day. For example, "5 o' clock, Arrggghh!". The children then do the same number of steps forward as the time called out by the Captain. When the  captain shouted "dinner time! Arrggghh!" we had to run around the hall. The first person to be caught was the new captain.
We then played all aboard the ship. Miss Clark shouted out the following instructions and we had to do the movement to match that instruction:

  •  All aboard: children make a straight line in front of the teacher.
  • Scrub the deck: children bend down and pretend to scrub the deck. Stop safely before bending down.
  • Captains coming: children salute and say 'Aye Aye Captain'.
  • Climb the rigging: children pretend to climb a rope ladder.
  • Walk the plank: children walk in a perfectly straight line. Hold your arms out to help you. Make this harder by asking the pupils to walk backwards.
  • Submarine: children lie on the floor with one foot in the air.
  • Sharks: children swim around the teaching space holding their hand on their head like a sharks fin.
  • Look for your own space when travelling around.
