Reception Spring 2020-21
PE - Dung Beetles!
In PE this week we have been pretending to be dung beetles rolling our poo (ball) around the hall. We were developing our ability to roll a ball to a target. We started off the lesson with a warm up where we had to travel around the hall in a variety of different ways; skipping, hopping, sidestepping and walking backwards.
We each were given a tennis ball and we had to find a space and sit next to our cone. Whilst sitting we had to push the ball around a cone using both hands without losing control of the ball, like a dung beetle would. We practiced going in one direction around the cone and then the other. We had to use our fingertips to push the ball. We then had to use one hand to push the ball around the cone. After we had to stand with two feet together and push the ball around our legs.
We then played 'dung beetles on the move' where we had to roll the ball along the floor a short way before chasing after it to pick it up. We had to bend down low and step forwards when we rolled. We had to make sure we had a straight arm, swinging it past our bottom and our hands had to be pointing towards where we wanted the ball to go.
Lastly we played 'bury the dung' where we had to use the cones already laid out and we had to roll the ball to hit a cone. If we hit the cone we got to keep that cone. We had a competition to see who could collect the most cones.
PE - Butterflies and Ladybirds
For PE this week, we were pretending to be ladybirds and butterflies. We were working on developing our accuracy when throwing to a target. To start, our warm up was travelling around the hall using different movements such as: skipping, galloping, side stepping, jogging, walking backwards. When Miss Clark shouted ‘this ladybird has..' and names a number, we had to stop as quickly as possible and complete the number of jumps named.
We then had to take a cone (flower) and a beanbag (butterfly) each and sit in a space placing their cone on the floor. We started by passing the beanbag from hand to hand imagining it is a butterfly flying around us. We then had to see if we could throw the bean bag in the air with one hand and catch it with our cone with the other hand. We also practiced throwing the bean bag into the cone from a short distance. When we got the hang of it we then moved around the hall, throwing our bean bags onto different cones - if we successfully threw the bean bag onto the cone - we got the keep that cone. We had a competition to see who could collect the most cones.
Lastly, we played 'ladybird spots.' In this game we had to work as a team with one beanbag each and one hoop. We had to imagine that the hoop is a ladybird missing it's spots. We had to try to add spots to the ladybird by throwing their beanbag to land on the ladybird. This meant that we had to take turns to throw our beanbag into the hoop. We had a competition to see which team could get the most spots on their ladybird. We had so much fun!
British Science Week 2021
As part of British Science Week 2021 Nursery and Reception looked at the structure of plants and flowers. We discussed how a flower can start from a bulb or a seed and talked about how they both need water, sunlight and plenty of space in order to grow. We dissected plants in order to find the roots, stem, leaves and flowers and we discussed the function of each part of the plant. We carried out an experiment in which we put some white flowers in red and blue food colouring. We made predictions as to what might happen to the flowers and watched carefully as the colours of the flowers changed over time. We discussed our findings and also completed some observational drawings of some plants. Reception were able to label their pictures to show the different parts of a plant. We had lots of fun learning all about plants!
