Maths - Measuring Capacity

In todays Maths lesson, Year 1 carried out an investigation measuring the capacity of 6 different sized containers. We filled a cup of with water and counted how many of those cups filled the container. This told us the capacity of the container.

Maths - Making equal groups

In Maths, we have been learning about multiplication and division. In this lesson we learnt how to make equal groups by creating groups. We were given a number of challenge cards where we had to collect a certain number of counters, split them into equal groups and work out how many of those groups we had.

Art - Andy Goldsworthy

This term we are learning about a famous artist called Andy Goldsworthy. We learnt that he likes to use natural materials, such as stones, logs, sand and grass in his artwork. We looked at his different artwork, and described the different patterns he used. We then went outside, and in pairs, gathered natural materials. We sorted these into different groups e.g. grouping all of the twigs together. After this, we worked in our pairs to create our own artwork in a similar style to the artists. We used objects such as leaves, twigs, grass, bark and flowers to create our artwork.

Literacy - List Poem

In Literacy, we are learning about a list poem called 'Ten things found in a wizards pocket'. Today we looked at the poem, discussed its features, gave our opinion on it and acted it out. Over the next few lessons we will be writing our own version which will be called 'Ten things found in a teachers pocket'.

Science - Senses

Todays lesson focused on our senses and we discussed how important each of them is and without having even one of them, it can affect our day to day life. For todays activity, we had a carousel of activities, one relating to each sense. For hearing, we completed a mini obstacle course. One partner was blindfolded and the other gave instructions on how to complete it. It was very important we listened carefully to complete this. For touch, there was a feely bag and we had to use our hands to feel the object in the bag and describe it to the other children to see if they could work out what it was. We used our taste and smell senses to describe fruit. For sight, we had to find measure a number of Tinys to identify which one was 7cm long. We really enjoyed this lesson!

Maths - Shapes

We began the lesson by discussing the difference between a 2D and a 3D shape. We then looked at 2D and 3D shapes, discussed their name and their properties. We were then placed in pairs, where we had to use toothpicks and playdough to create those shapes. Once we created the shape, we had to write the name of the shape, how many sides, edges or vertices they had and if they had faces, how many of them.
