Science - Our Body
In Science, Year 1 have been learning about parts of the human body. To help us with this, we went outside onto the yard and drew around a child’s body using chalk. We sat in a circle, and one by one, we identified a part of the human body and Miss Henderson labelled each part. We added sound buttons to each word to help us with our phonic knowledge and to help us spell some of the more tricky scientific vocabulary!
Well done Year 1! You really worked hard to identify body parts!
Printing with shapes!
Year 1 have been developing their printing skills in art. They looked at different examples of printing and understood 'printing' is to make a copy of something. They used 3D shapes to make their print and created repeating patterns on paper. They were really careful to get just the right amount of paint onto the surface of their chosen shape. They gently placed their shape onto the paper holding it still for a few seconds before gently lifting it off to make the print as accurate as possible. They were reminded of the primary colours and given the opportunity to make secondary colours by mixing primary colours to make their print if they wanted to. Well done Year 1!
Recognising Patterns!
Year 1 went outside to look for patterns in the environment. The children were able to spot so many different patterns and identified ones that repeated. They also made some of their own repeating patterns using equipment such as duplo and natural materials. They even made a human repeating pattern when they lined up to go back into class. They were shown some pictures such as flowers, socks, piano keys, plants and many more. They were asked to draw the picture of their choice as accurately as they could using shapes to draw around and rulers. They used their observational skills well and created some great art work. Well done Year 1! We are super proud of your knowledge of pattern.
Sports Day Maths!
On your marks get set go...Year 1 took part in a carousel of counting activities. They moved around the classroom to each station to complete each task. The focus was to count in tens working with numbers up to 50. They worked well in their teams and enjoyed their maths lesson. Well done Year 1!
Staying Safe!
Year 1 have been discussing the importance of staying safe near water and crossing the road. They listened to some important rules that everyone should follow! We came up with some problems and the children were able to recall important information and explain how they would act in a difficult situation. Finally they designed their own water or road safety posters in their books. You can clearly see that they understood the information and designed some fantastic posters to inform us of the rules using slogans and signs.
Well done Year 1 !
Literacy - Jack and the Beanstalk!
In our literacy lessons we have been learning the story of Jack and the beanstalk. First Miss Henderson used pictures on the whiteboard to help us to recite each part of the story. In our next lesson we acted out the story using our indoor and outdoor environment.
Miss Henderson narrated each part and some of the children were really excited to take part and become the characters. Everyone listened really well and encouraged each other. It was great to see the children acting out the story again at break times and adding their own narratives to aid their learning of the familiar tale. Excellent story telling through drama Year 1!
P.S.H.E-Feelings
Year 1 have been discussing feelings! First we did a brainstorm to find out how many different feelings we were aware of. We then looked at some slides of different situations and discussed how the children in the pictures might be feeling and why. The children gave some really good answers and were able to explain their reasons. We then listened to some clues that helped us to determine which picture on our worksheet matched each clue. Finally we played a game... The children took turns to portray a feeling of their choice and the rest of us had lots of fun guessing which feeling they were acting out. They were also able to give some good reasons as to why they might have felt this way. The most important message was... Everyone has feelings and we all show our feelings in different ways and what we feel on the inside can effect how we look on the outside. We all agreed that this would help us to notice how our friends were feeling and how we can help them to them feel better. Excellent discussion Year 1!
Outdoor Learning !
What a fun afternoon! Year 1 had the best time taking part in a range of activities out on the field. We all tried our hand at archery, den building and fire starting! We also took part in activities that could be likened to abseiling, canoeing and rock scrambling. A big thanks to Mal, Marion and Jake who led the session. Well done Year 1!
Power Shot Challenge!
Year 1 had a fantastic time taking part in the whole school 'Power Shot Challenge' organised by Mr Taylor. They had three attempts to kick the ball as hard as they could into the goal, competing against their peers. Their scores were recorded and they will all receive a certificate for taking part.
Well done Year 1! You were all amazing at taking 'power shots'. All staff took part too!
Euro Football Match!
With the ongoing European Championships exciting the nation, we ran a whole school football competition where children played as different qualifying teams in their house teams. In Year 1 Willow were the winners but most importantly we had a great time keeping active and playing alongside our friends in the sunshine!
Music-The Lighthouse Family-Lifted
In our music lesson we listened and appraised the song 'Lifted' by the Lighthouse Family. We discussed why we did or did not like the song and how the music made us feel. We then discussed which instruments we could hear being played throughout the song. We were able to hear a guitar, bells, drums and a triangle. We discussed what the music made us think of and again we gave some great answers... 'a sunny day' 'being at the beach eating ice-cream 'being at the park having fun' 'flying in the clouds'. Finally we were able to find the pulse and used different parts of our bodies to tap to the rhythm. Well done everyone!
Music-The Lighthouse Family-Ocean Drive
In our music lesson we listened and appraised the song 'Ocean Drive' by The Lighthouse Family. We discussed why we did or did not like the song and how the music made us feel. We then discussed which instruments we could hear being played throughout the song. We thought we could hear a tambourine, a piano and drums. We discussed what the music made us think of and again we gave some great answers. Finally we were able to find the pulse and used different parts of our bodies to tap to the rhythm. Well done everyone!
Be Safe, Be Fit, Be Healthy Week!
Change For Life!
The Change 4 Life team joined Year 1 today to discuss how we can stay fit and healthy. As part of our session we thought about ways we can improve this. We were given the opportunity to discuss which foods to eat, personal hygiene, getting the right amount of sleep and how much exercise to do every day. We know exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and we took part in a range of games such as corners, pirate ships and dodgeball. We really enjoyed all of the sports activities to help get us moving. Year 1 had so much fun! A big thank you to the Change for Life Sunderland Team!
Sports Day!
Year 1 had a great annual sports afternoon. They took part in a carousel of activities on the field and really enjoyed working as a team to support each other throughout each activity. They were able to use a range of equipment for each activity and were awarded points for first, second and third place. The points will be totalled amongst all classes and a trophy will be presented to the winning team.
Well done to each and every child for taking part and showing good team spirit! Everyone loved getting a sticker at the end of sports afternoon!
