Year 1 Autumn 2020-21

Our First Week in Year 1!

On our first day in Year 1 we spent time learning about our new classroom.  Miss Henderson and Miss Brooks introduced us to the new rules and routines we must follow. We completed some 'All About Me' activities so our teachers could get to know us better. We also drew self portraits and practised writing our name. We played a board game with Miss Henderson and Miss Brooks so they could learn some interesting facts about us. We rolled a dice, moved our counter that that number of spaces and shared a fact. We also completed a 'likes' and 'dislikes' activity and coloured in a rainbow using colours that represented us. We've had a great first day!

Representing Numbers!

Each group were given a task to challenge our knowledge of numbers. We used a range of mathematical equipment to match numbers to objects, order numbers, recognise numbers, count with accuracy and some of us wrote some impressive number sentences. Well done year 1! You really worked hard in a practical maths lesson.

Ordering Amounts!

We have been learning how to order amounts using objects. First we were presented with three numbers and we placed the correct number of bears beside each number. We then discussed which number had the least amount of objects and which number had the greatest amount of objects. We then used the number line on the wall in the classroom to determine where the third number should be placed. We discussed the order of the three numbers and why it needed to be placed in-between the greatest amount and least amount. Finally we worked in pairs to sort bears into three amounts and place them in order from the least to the greatest amount without using numbers to help us. Well done everyone!

Science-Materials

We have started our science topic... Materials! We discussed materials and their properties. We then went outside with word cards and labelled all of the  materials that we found. We considered why certain materials had been used for different objects and made links to the properties of the materials. We really enjoyed our first science lesson and can't wait to find out more about materials! Well done Year 1!

Sharing Stories!

We enjoyed our first visit to the library. We chose a book and discussed it with our friends. We explained to each other what the book might be about through the pictures and looked at some of the characters. We were able to spot capital letters, full stops, blurb, title and explain why we selected our books. We can't wait to visit the school library again!

Primary and Secondary colours!

In art we have been learning which colours are primary colours and how to mix them to find out which secondary colours they make. We found out that red and yellow make orange, blue and red make purple and blue and yellow make green. We displayed our understanding of this by making a colour sentence on paper. We then demonstrated our colour mixing skills further by painting a colour wheel. We painted the primary colours on the colour wheel first then filled the spaces in-between with the secondary colours the primary colours had created. We all enjoyed taking part in this colour mixing experiment!

Great colour mixing knowledge year 1!

Sorting Objects!

We have been discussing ways of sorting objects. We worked in groups to sort the objects either by size, colour or shape. Some of us even sorted shapes into groups depending on how many sides they have. We were able to discuss and explain how we sorted the objects with each other at the end of the lesson.  We really enjoyed this practical lesson and looking forward to our next sorting activity!

P.S.H.E - Listening

We have been learning why we need to listen. First we discussed why we thought listening was important, we gave some really good examples and explanations. We then played the traffic light game. We had listen to the instruction and do the correct action...stand still, jump up and down or jog on the spot. We tried really hard to listen especially if the action was repeated. We then sat back to back with a partner and drew an object. We then described our object and our partner had to guess what it was. We discussed as a class who thought it was easy and who thought it was hard to identify the object our partners had drawn. Finally we discussed how our friends would feel if we didn’t listen to them and how it would make us feel too.

We discussed many different scenarios and gave reasons and explanations as to why listening to each other is so valuable and vital to our learning.

P.S.H.E-What makes a good friend?

To begin the lesson, we thought about what the word ‘friend’ means and what we like about our friends. We then discussed friendship qualities and why these qualities make someone a good friend. These qualities included: being caring, helpful, honest, kind, trustworthy, and a good listener. In Year 1, we know it is important we try our hardest to be a good friend to others. To show the qualities each one of us has, we drew a picture of ourselves in the middle of a friendship flower and then thought of 5 qualities that make us a good friend and wrote these on the petals. We know however that sometimes we can get things wrong, so we wrote two qualities we would like to develop on the petals. As a final reflection, we were asked at some point during the day to make time to say thank you to a friend and explain what they did and why it helped you to feel happy and good inside.
