Year 3 Spring 2021-22
Balanced Diet
Today we have been looking at the different food groups and how they help our bodies. We then learnt what each food group in our bodies. We had lots of different ideas and talk about different foods we liked and disliked. We then organised foods into the different groups and then we created our own balanced diet.
Human and Physical Geography
As part of our learning on our local area we have been learning about physical and human geography. We then thought about Washington and the surrounding areas and created a list of what physical and human geography is around us.
Year 3 Presents ...
In our literacy lesson today we have been looking at the Roman legend Romulus and Remus. In small groups we broke the story down to scenes and then disused what would be happening. We then came together as a class and recreated the shorty using freeze frames.
Emotional Health
Today Year 3 and 4 were visited by our School Nurse Jenifer and Vicky. They were talking to use about emotional health. We covered what is a good friend is, how we are good friends, what good qualities of our friends and then we shared this with our friends. We spoke about self esteem, what it means and how we should shout out what we are proud of ourselves for. We talked about the signs of bullying and the different types of bullying and also what we should do if we are being bullied or know somebody who is. We talked about little feelings and big feelings and how to deal with negative feelings. We all shared fantastic ideas to our friends. We enjoyed our learning with Jenifer and Vicky.
Chinese New Year
We have been learning about the celebration of Chinese New Year. We read the story of the zodiac and how it was created by a race between the animals. Then we learnt about customs and tradition. Together with Year 4 we created our own dragon scale where we will join it together to make our own Chinese dragon.
Learning the Ocarina
We have been learning the ocarina in our music learning. We have been learning our finger positioning, blowing into our instrument and the notes for Twinkle, Twinkle" little star.
Logo Printing
As part of our art unit looking into fashion we have been looking at brand logos. We learnt the importance of them for being able to identify the brand. We then looked at the different logos of Vivienne Westwood and sketched them. We then created our own logo, cut it out of lino and then printed onto fabric. We enjoyed creating our logo final piece.
Greenhouses
In year 3 this term we have been developing our ideas for creating our very own mini greenhouse. We looked at the different features, tested our ideas for the structure then designed our own. With our friends we created our own greenhouses. We might even plant some seeds.
Distribution
We have been learning about how plants distribute their seeds. We learnt that there are many different ways. These include by waters, shaking and on animal's fur. In small groups we then organised different seeds into how they were dispersed.
Dividing by Three
In our maths we have been practising dividing by three today. As a group we shared our equally different numbers of cubes to find the correct multiples of three. We enjoyed this task together.
Road Safety
In our PSHE learning we have been talking about road safety and the right and wrong things to do when crossing the road, walking along a road or in the car. Always remember to Stop, Look, Listen!
What is a miracle?
In our RE learning, we have been talking about what is a miracle. We talked about our different ideas and then we read some stories from the Bible. We all enjoyed the story where Jesus helped the blind man to see. We then done some drama to create our own freezeframe.
Yasmine and Tom : Personal Space
Today in our learning we have been talking about personal space and what makes us feel comfortable and uncomfortable. We talked about situations where it made Tom happy or unhappy about somebody being in his personal space or not. We then went on to talk about what we would do in them situations and who we could talk to.
Gymnastics
We have come to the end of our gymnastic unit in PE. We have learnt new balances, jumps and movement. We are confident to jump from the horse safely and with confidence.
Kindness Day
We celebrated Valentine's Day with a kindness day. Across the day, we were awarded kindness notes and a raffle ticket. Each raffle ticket had a special prize. We are always kind in Year 3!
World Book Day 2022
What a fantastic celebration we had for World Book Day! It was action packed from the minute we set foot into school. We created our own book mark, created a new cover for our favourite book, read with the children in Nursery, shared stories to our friends with our favourite toy and enjoyed lunch with Captain Hook and his crew. By the end of the school day, we were exhausted so settled down with a nice story, milk and cookies.
Red Nose Day
Happy Red Nose Day!
In Year 3 we have enjoyed lots of dun Red Nose Day activities. We are proud of all the school collecting 506 tins of food for the Sunderland Food Bank. We learnt about food banks and who uses them. We then created posters to show people why the food bank are so important and what products they have.
Year 3 Designers
You may remember in our last newsletter we were creating our own logo inspired by Vivienne Westwood. We have been looking at recycled fashion! We took a plain white T-shirt and created our very own design with our band logo on. We all had very different ideas but we have created some amazing end pieces!
Traffic Survey
As part of their geography learning Year 3 have been looking at the area of Washington. We went for a walk along to the Oxclose bridge and done a traffic survey of all the vehicles using the road. It was amazing to see how many lorries and cars we counted in such a short space of time. We then returned to school and created bar charts and read the data from our graphs.
Gymnastics
In PE we have been learning balances and stretches for our gymnastics unit. We have been exploring how we can use our bodies to make different shapes.
Multiply 2 digits by 1 digit
In our maths learning we have begun to learn how to multiply 2 digits by 1 digit. We have been using base 10 and place value cards to help us work out the answer. We have enjoyed our maths learning.
Yoga
Year 3 enjoyed their first yoga lesson today. They learnt how to control their breathing and some poses. These included Strong:warrior, Kind:tree, Brave:chair, Humble:forward fold and Friendly:down dog. It was a lovely relaxing PE lesson and we look forward to next week.
Safer Internet Day 2022
We celebrated Safer Internet Day in Year 3. We looked at online relationships and how we should show respect. We talked about the right and wring things we should say to friends online and what we should do if we see others being unkind. We created our own respect online relationships recipe with friends.
Conjunctions
In our literacy we have been creating our own legend story based on The Lambton Worm. Today we have been writing our dilemma using compound sentences. With our friends we formed the sentences and made sure the conjunction was in the middle of the sentence.
Dividing with Remainders
In our maths we have been practising dividing with remainders. We found it very tricky to begin with but we kept trying and cracked it! We enjoyed using the cubes to help us divide!
Mental Wellbeing
Growing Together
As part of celebrating our mental wellbeing we have been looking around the topic of "Growing Together". As a class we discussed the effects of negative and positive words and how when used, they can affect the person and how they emotionally develop. We then created positive butterflies with sayings to help other grow. We have all planted our own sunflower ready to help our garden to bloom again!
Touch Typing
In our computing, we have been learning how to touch type. We have talked about the correct posture to use when on the computer and then where they keys are on the keyboard. We then challenged ourselves to a touch typing competition to see how many letters we could find and how accurate we were.
Measuring Length
In our maths we have been practising our skills in measuring lengths. We began with Tom's Tips for measuring the height and width of items. We then used his tips and measured different items around our classroom.
Eater Egg Competition
WOW! Well done Year 3 for your fantastic entries into the Jubilee Easter Egg Competition. There ware all fantastic entries! Well done to not only our winners but also all of the children who took part.
