Year 6 Autumn 2020-21

Welcome Back Year 6!

Year 6 have settled really well back in to school. They have enjoyed having their lunch outside (when the weather allows it!) This week they have started their history work and are really looking forward to finding out more about WW2!

Black History Month- The Windrush Generation

Year 6 really enjoyed learning about the Windrush Generation. We enjoyed watching a docudrama provided to us by the Alive and Kicking theatre group, here we learnt about who the Windrush Generation where and what they were promised. We spent time exploring sources and went on to create our own secondary sources. We then created a conscience alley to really think about the feelings of Black Caribbean people arriving in Britain at that time. Finally we found out about the Notting Hill carnival and completed some research in groups to find out more about the Caribbean culture.

Finding the Pulse!

In our music unit we are studying the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. We have found out facts about the artist and also compared the song to "Top of the World" by the carpenters. Later in the unit we will explore the beat. In this lesson we found the pulse and moved our bodies in different ways to a  fast and slow tempo!

Let's Dance!

Year 6 are really enjoying their new P.E unit- dance! They have really enjoyed working with our dance instructor and are looking forward to putting together a Christmas surprise for their parents and carers.

Northumbria Police- Healthy Relationships

As part of our anti bullying week, we were joined by Sarah from Northumbria Police who talked to us about healthy relationships. We discussed how power should be balanced in a relationship. We explored what made a good friend and a bad friend.

Christmas Dinner

Year 6 enjoyed their Christmas dinner! Thank you to the dinner staff, it was delicious!

Worry Spirals

As part of our PSHE work the class have spoke about worries including those at school and at home. We shared our worries with each other and spoke about how we can try to overcome these. We wrote them on our worry spirals to reflect upon.

Year 6 Grounds Maintenance Team

The Year 6 Maintenance team are really enjoying their role around school. They have been working outside clearing up leaves and trimming back the bushes! Great job boys!

Year 6 become fitter!

During this half term we have a had a real focus on our fitness levels. We have tried to one mile at least once a week or a Joe Wick's work out. I have been really impressed with how well all of the class have been doing trying to beat their own times!

Children in Need

Year 6 enjoyed their non school uniform day including Pudsey accessories. In PHSE we explored the rights of a child and how this related to themselves and others all around the world.

Design Technology- Kinnex

To start our unit of Design Technology, we explored kinnex and tried to develop the shape of a fair ground round that could turn on an axel. Next session, we will consider how we could use a motor to turn the wheel.

Santa run!

Santa ran a mile today with the support of Year 6! Great job everyone!

P.E- Netball

We have started our P.E unit in netball. In our first session we focussed on different passes including: chest, over arm and bounce. We discussed when we would use different passes and why. We ensured our technique included stepping in to our passes. Next week, we will move on to look at footwork when receiving the ball.

Electric Games

We have come to the end of our first Science unit- Electricity. We have learnt all about parallel and series circuits, electric symbols and about its dangers. At the end of our unit, we enjoyed working in groups to create our own Electricity games with bulbs and buzzers!

Year 6 Boot Camp!

To finish off a fantastic half term, Year 6 enjoyed their boot camp session with Mr Taylor. They participated in lots of different fitness exercises, a game of jets and bombers and capture the flag. Well done Year 6, you have had a great first half term!

Odd Socks! Anti-Bullying

The start of Anti-bullying week began with odd socks. We discussed why odd socks showed how everyone was different and we are united against bullying. We then designed our own odd socks.
