Traditional Tales!

In Year 1 we have been reading a range of traditional tales. Each group have created a drama performance thinking about the main characters that are in the stories. and how they might behave and talk. We used facial expressions to show how the characters might be feeling in different situations within the stories. We all enjoyed watching each other perform and there was some great acting skills from the children to act out a traditional tale through drama. Take a look at the pictures and see if you can guess which traditional tale each group performed! Well done Year 1! You all entertained each other through your brilliant acting skills!

Identifying tens and ones!

We have been learning how to identify tens and ones using a range of mathematical equipment. This helped us to see  numbers in a visual form by grouping sets of tens and adding on ones. First we practised counting in tens and used our fingers to show the next tens number. We also practised counting on from a given number counting the tens first then the ones using a number line to help us. We worked in pairs to make the numbers then practised counting the amount we had made. Well done! You all worked hard to identify tens and ones!

Stain Glass Windows!

Year 1, created their own stain glass windows by tearing pieces of tissue paper and gluing them onto a clear plastic sheet. We then created a frame for our art work to be displayed. Some of us created a picture to tell a story like the stain glass windows we see within churches. We put our stain glass art in the window to let the sun shine through and capture all of the bright colours. We discussed how the sun can shine through the  paper and create colourful light. Year 1, enjoyed creating stain glass windows.

Cookie Monster Subtraction!

Year 1 have been helping 'The Cookie Monster' figure out where all of his cookies have been disappearing to. They used counters to represent his cookies and were able to solve some subtractions by taking away a given amount. They used their knowledge of number bonds to 20 and used the subtraction symbol within their number sentences. They used some technical vocabulary to explain the method and their understanding of subtraction using numbers within 20. They really enjoyed helping 'The Cookie Monster' find out where all his cookies had gone!

PSHE-Going for goals-persistence!

Over the last few weeks we have been discussing what sort of things we might be struggling with and find hard to do either in school or at home and how we might be able to overcome this. We have also talked about setting ourselves a goal to achieve something important to us. This week we have been using the penguin to help us to understand the word 'persistent'. We know the penguin stands for 'resilience' and understand that means you don't give up easily and keep on trying. We learnt how the word 'persistent' has a similar meaning to 'resilience'. We reminded each other about the things we find difficult to do and held the penguin to help us think of what we could do or how best to achieve our goal. We also talked about becoming frustrated and annoyed with ourselves if we still couldn't do it after practising. We discussed strategies... like taking things slowly and in smaller steps and even time away from the activity to rethink what we could do next to help us achieve. The children came up with some really good answers and supported each other by adding helpful ideas into the conversation and showing respect by listening well to each other! Excellent Year 1!

World Book Day

Today was World Book Day and to celebrate we got dressed up as our favourite characters from a book. There were lots of fantastic costumes. We also designed and made our very own book mark to use when reading at home. They all looked fantastic and we can't wait to use them.

R.N.L.I

The R.N.L.I. (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) came to talk to us about how to stay safe in and around water. We learnt lots of helpful information, like what the different colours of the flags mean and how this helps us make good choices. We also found out what the lifeguards do and what they wear so they can be easily spotted, what you should do if you ever find yourself in a difficult situation in water and how to float correctly and call for help. We learnt lots of important life saving skills and really enjoyed taking part in all the activities!

Internet Safety Day 2020

We had a visit from the Police today to discuss 'Internet Safety Day'. We learnt ways to keep ourselves safe online. The police were really friendly and helpful in answering our questions and concerns towards using the internet and shared some funny stories with us. We know that we shouldn't share any personal information online and if we are ever unsure about using the internet we should ask our parents/guardians or a teacher at school for help and advise. The internet is a fun and educational tool but we must use it safely. Thank you for helping us to learn all about 'Internet Safety Day'.

Who! When! why! What! How!

This term we have been using the story 'Dogger' to improve our writing skills. We have been learning how to use focus words... Who, when, why, what and how to write questions to become detectives to help Dave find 'Dogger'. We discussed which questions would be most helpful to us as detectives then wrote one down on our whiteboard. We asked questions such as... What does he look like? Where did you see him last? How do you think you lost him? We then decided it would be a good idea to hot-seat someone pretending to be Dave! We took our questions back to the carpet and began our detective work asking a range of questions to help find 'Dogger' for 'Dave'. We had really good fun being 'Dogger Detectives' and learning how to ask and write questions! We were so happy when the two friends found each other again thanks to our great line of questioning!

Well done Year 1!

Whose is that Shelfie?

While celebrating World Book Day, the children took part in an activity called 'Whose is that Shelfie?' The children looked at some different book shelves chosen by the teachers and staff in school and had to guess which shelf belonged to each staff member based on their chosen books. The children worked together and as a class we were able to identify lots of teachers book shelves. The children enjoyed learning about the staff and the books they enjoy reading. Well Done Year 1!
