Theatre Visit

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the theatre to watch 'Room on the Broom'. Many of the children had read the Julia Donaldson book at home and it was a great treat to be able to watch it in theatre!

Our Local Area

As part of our current topic 'Blackfell Explorers', we went out into our local village of Blackfell to observe and record what human features were nearby. We really enjoyed getting to know our local area and were able to identify features that we had not recognised before. By the end of the lesson we were able to recall the difference between physical and human features.

Visit to Let's Play Big

As part of the World of Work Fortnight in school, Year 1 had the opportunity to visit the Let's Play Big centre in Blackfell. Whilst there, they engaged in role play and had the opportunity to dress up as some of their favourite emergency services. Year 1 had so much fun and didn't want to leave!

Multiplication and Division

This week Year 1 have been learning basic multiplication and division. They used their knowledge of the 2, 5 and 10 times table to solve one-step problems which involved doubling and sharing. By the end of the week they were able to use mathematical vocabulary to explain what they had learnt.

Position and Direction

This week in maths we have been learning to describe position and direction by using the language: left, right, forwards, backwards, above and below. As part of this unit, we took turns to safely navigate our blindfolded partners around an obstacle course using the correct language. We had lots of fun and used good listening skills to carry this out effectively.

World of Work Fortnight

As part of our World of Work theme of 'Emergency Services', Year 1 have had lots of visitors come into school to educate them about their jobs and the route they took to begin their careers. They have been lucky enough to be visited by 2 Police Officers, a Fireman, a Soldier,  Patient Transport Officers, Prison Guards and Nurses from many different sectors. Year 1 have learnt so much from the experience and have even started to think about their future aspirations. Thank you to all of our visitors for taking time out to speak to us!

Buddhist Meditation

This term the children have been learning about Buddhism. They have looked at what Buddhists believe, how they worship and why they worship. To help the children understand how Buddhists worship they took part in a group meditation. They learnt how to relax their minds and think about what is important to them.

Fun with Fractions!

Over the next couple of weeks in maths we will be learning to find half and quarter of objects, amounts and shapes. This week we have been focussing on halving and we made our own fruit salad by halving fruit. We thought carefully about which way to cut the fruit and found out that some could be halved in more than one way. We understand that 2 equal halves make 1 whole. At playtime we enjoyed eating our fruit salad in the sunshine!
