Year 1 Spring Term 2018-19

                                          P.E.

This week in P.E. we have started our new unit Infant Agility.

This unit will help us develop many skills such as; coordination, agility,

core stability, spacial  awareness and many more. To develop these skills,

we completed activities that involved balancing and bouncing. We will

continue to practice more of these skills over the next term.

                      Year 1's Class Assembly

What a fantastic performance Year 1 put on for their

parents/carers to introduce their new topic 'Toys'!

They did extremely well to remember their lines/dances

as they only had a few weeks to practise. They thoroughly

enjoyed sharing their new gained knowledge and this was

                 evident throughout the performance.

                      Safer Internet Day

The focus of this year's Safer Internet Day was 'consent'.

As part of their session on internet safety awareness,

Year 1 learnt the key ways to stay safe whilst online.

They created 5 rules to follow whilst using the internet

and then shared their rules as a class. By the end of the

session, they had good understanding of what information

should not be shared online and were able to respond well

to tricky scenarios which may have put themselves at risk.

Planning and Making Puppets in D.T

After a couple of lessons learning about puppets

and the materials used to make them, we developed a

plan suggesting how we were going to make our own.

We used our plans to create the finished product and

were very proud with what we had achieved! Next we

will evaluate our design to explain what went well and

what we could improve next time.

                         The Good Samaritan

We have been looking at stories about Jesus.

This week we focused on The Good Samaritan

and finding out the moral of the story. We created

posters to show how we can be good Samaritan's

and discussed the different ways we can help people.

                    Measurement in Maths

This week in maths we have been learning

to compare and measure length and height.

                    We understand the different between

length and height and the vocabulary

used to compare them. We estimated

and measured the length of classroom

                    objects using various non-standard units

and recorded them in our books. Next week

we will move onto measuring length and height

                    using standard units.

                     World Book Day 2019

Year 1 enjoyed completing a range of World Book

Day activities around the story 'The Three Billy

Goats Gruff'. These activities included: performing

a puppet show based around the story, writing their

favourite quotes from the book, designing a front

cover and painting their favourite character from

the story. The had lots of fun and were able to

answer questions about the book during a quiz at

                         the end of the day.

                  Visit to Preston Park Museum

What a great day Year 1 had at Preston Park Museum!

We had so much fun learning all about the Victorian

period; including how household objects and toys have

changed over the past 182 years. We also enjoyed

visiting old-fashioned shops such as: a Victorian clothes

shop, a toy shop and chemist. We also took a trip to the

police station where we were greeted by an old-fashioned

policeman who gave us a tour of a small, grubby cell and

taught us about some of the punishments.

                          The Easter Story

Over the last couple of weeks, Year 1 have been learning all

about the Easter story. They began by looking in a mystery

bag on their tables. They had to investigate the items and

find out what they thought the story was gong to be about.

We read the Easter story as a whole class, then the children

worked in small groups to sequence the story and write their

own sentences. In the next lesson the children all tasted hot

cross buns. We talked about what each part of the bun represented.

                  Science Investigation

This term in science we have been learning about animals,

including humans and how they are classified. We also

carried out an investigation to explore which animals/insects

live in our local area and how they survive in their habitat.

               Visiting the Ducklings in Reception

We were very excited to visit the newly hatched ducklings

in Reception this week! We each had a cuddle and stoke of

them and learnt a lot about how they were born and cared for.
