Year 1 Autumn Term 2017-18

Our First Day in Year 1!

Welcome to Year 1! We all had a fantastic first day and can't wait to see what else is in store for us this year!

Miss Stockport shrunk the kids!

Miss Stockport practised her magic skills on Year 1 and used a shrinking spray to make us all tiny! We had lots of problems when we were so small including falling down drains, getting lost in the Bark Area and nearly getting stood on! She decided after a while to help us grow back to our normal size so we could write about it.

Dance, Dance, Dance!

We have really enjoyed our first topic in P.E - Dance! We have looked at different ways to travel, move and pose and practiced some simple dances! This pirate dance was one of our favourites!

Children In Need

A brilliant day! Year 1 loved dressing up in their spotty accessories for Children In Need and doing their bit for charity. We thoroughly enjoyed sampling lots of delicious cakes and biscuits from the cake sale and dancing with our friends at the disco in the afternoon! There was even some time to create our own Pudsey Bears on Purple Mash  on the computers!

Visiting Oxclose Church

Year 1 visited Canon Hopper at Oxclose Church to learn about what the church is used for such as services, weddings and christenings as well as which jobs Canon Hopper does. While we were there, we also looked around to see what features we recognised such as the cross, bible, lectern and font. Canon Hopper told us they do a lot of singing at the church and we even had some time to do some singing ourselves!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

We wish it could be Christmas everyday because we had the best party to celebrate. Year 1 looked amazing in their party clothes and loved partying all afternoon with their friends. We played lots of different games including Pass the Parcel, Musical Statues and Corners. It was a lovely way to end the year!

New Beginnings

What a week! Year 1 have settled straight in and enjoyed their first week in their new classroom. We have spent time getting to know each other more, reminding ourselves of our class rules and recapping the 5R's.

Circus Skills

Year 1 had a brilliant afternoon learning different circus skills and using a range of circus equipment. We practiced our balancing with peacock feathers, juggled with scarves, spun plates, rolled flower sticks, rode a handle-less bike and much more! It was a fun-filled afternoon!

We just can't stop Dancing!

Over the course of a few weeks during our dance topic we learnt this dance to Shakira's 'Waka Waka'. After breaking down the different movements and learning it in stages, we built up to this final performance.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

In our literacy lessons we have been looking at Roald Dahl and the story Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Throughout the unit we have been looking at the setting and the characters then for our final piece of writing we focused on the chocolate! Year 1 loved testing and tasting different chocolates and making their own using different ingredients. We then wrote a review of our friends' chocolate explaining what we liked and didn't like.

Away in a Manger

Key Stage 1 performed brilliantly in their Christmas Production 'Away in a Manger'. The children sang their hearts out and spoke with confidence and clarity. Both staff and parents are incredibly proud of you all. Well done everybody!

Material Hunt!

In science we have been learning about everyday materials so we decided to go on a hunt around school to see what we could find! We realised lots of objects in our school are made out of a range of materials and had lots of fun finding the different ones!

We love 2Code!

In ICT we have been working on Purple Mash on a special program called 2Code. It talks us through how to give instructions to a program to make pictures move. In this case, it was a fish tank and we had to make the fish move left and right. By the end some of us even created our own tank where the were fish moving in different directions.

Anti-Bullying Week

Year 1 had a fantastic week learning all about what we can do to prevent bullying, how we can be a good friend and what we can do if we think we are being bullied. We built a 3D friend out of junk modelling and wrote different ways of being a good friend on sticky notes e.g. being kind, helpful, caring etc. Later in the week, we practised being friendly by giving someone from our class a complement during circle time.

Victorians

As part of our history topic we have been learning about the Victorian Era. First we  became detectives and used a range of pictures and sources to learn different facts about Queen Victoria and what life was like in Victorian Britain. Then we inspected a range of artefacts from Victorian homes to interpret information about the past and compare it with our lives and homes today.

Oh, yes we did!

Both Year 1 and Year 2 have enjoyed learning about the fairy tale 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs', which made it all the more exciting when we went to watch it at the theatre. Together we visited the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle to see the story come to life and it was fantastic! Every child was enthralled by the performance and loved getting involved with all the cheering, heckling and shouting! It was the perfect end to our literacy unit.
