Super Sculptures - Tangrams

This term we will be looking at the work of the famous sculptors. In todays lesson we looked at the work of Antony Gormley. We learnt that he makes sculptures in the shape of human form using simple wooden and metal shapes. In our first lesson we used flat shapes called Tans. We arranged them to create our own individual representation of the human form.

As a class we discussed some of Antony Gormley's sculptures and decided if we liked them, how they made us feel, what materials we thought he used, what they reminded us of and did we know the names of any of them. Well done Year 2!

PSHE- matching jobs

In PSHE, we have continued to learn about different jobs. We matched jobs up to their roles and began to think abut some of the jobs we might like.

PSHE- Building the community

We started by thinking about our own community and the types of buildings and services we have. We shared the below ideas. We were then asked to build the service or place out of Lego and make all of the people who might have jobs there. Take a look at some of our ideas.

NPSCC: Green Day

We took part in raising money for NSPCC. We wore green, took part in TTR competition, accessed some activities on Childline and designed our own posters. We remembered the key message: Speak out, stay safe.

Art-Kinetic Sculptures

We have been looking at the work of another famous sculptor Alexander Calder. We learnt that he created kinetic sculptures that move either by touch or through the wind. He liked to use bright colours and simple shapes. Mobiles are made with hanging rods, each rod has another connected to it which hang below. We worked in groups to make our own kinetic sculptures. First we decorated the rods then used objects to hang from the rods and this also helps the mobile to move in the wind. We took our mobiles outside to test them. They looked fantastic and brightened up the bark area. Great team work Year 2!

Science- Seeds

To start our learning about plants, we have explored different types of seeds. We were tasked with finding out where and when they would need planting by using the information on the back of the pack. Some of the seeds were tiny- we couldn't believe they would grow into plants! We spoke about what a plant would need to germinate.

Fun in the Snow!

Year 2 had great fun in the snow, from a few snowball fights to building snow men! Who would of though it, snow in March!?

PSHE- Jobs

In PSHE, we have begun to learn about how jobs help people earn money to pay for things they need and want. In our first session, we discussed all the different types of jobs we knew about and how these help us to pay for things like our homes, shopping and even our bills. We then carried out a charades style game, we were tasked with working in pairs to act out the role of a job, if the class were able to guess correctly we earned our wages. Can you guess the types of jobs we acted out?

Super Sculptures - poses

In preparation for our next art lesson, we posed in two different positions. Next we selected the pose we would like to use to make a clay sculpture in the style of Henry Moore. To help us with this we sketched the pose and focused on the position of each body part.

Gymnastics- Up, over, under, through, down!

In this lesson, we discussed different movements and went through the safety elements. We all enjoyed taking some new risks and experiments with the gymnastic equipment.

R.E Islamic Faith

In R.E children have been finding out more about the Islamic religion. Today they enjoyed learning about prayer mats and how these are used and finding out about their holy book, the Quran. Children enjoyed exploring these items.

World Book Day

Year 2 had a great day celebrating world book day! We dressed as a colour or as a character! We enjoyed shared reading with Year 6 and designed our own book tokens to take part in this years World Book Day competition. We have also been enjoying a different coloured book each day!

DT- Starting to create our Fire Engines

During this half term, we must plan and make our own fire engines which must move and have features of a fire engine. In today's lesson we looked at what fire engines look like and what they will need. We then began to build the beginning of our fire engines using junk modelling materials. Some of us made ladders, others focused on the engines and some made fire hoses.

P.E Shapes

In P.E this term, we are completing a unit on gymnastics. This week we used shapes such as pikes, straddles, front supports and back supports. We chose 4 of our shapes and put them in to a short routine to perform to the class. We focused on tension, pointed toes and fingers.

Super Sculptures - pipe cleaner mannequins!

We were given three pipe cleaners to construct the pose of our choice. We listened carefully to instructions so we could attach the three pipe cleaners together to create our chosen pose of the human form. We manipulated each pipe cleaner to try and represent the shape of the body parts of our chosen pose. We are looking forward to using clay in our next lesson to create statues of our partners in the style of Henry Moore. Excellent work Year 2!

Playing the Ocarina

In Year 2, children have learnt to play various notes on the ocarina and are starting to learn the tune: London's Burning.

Art-Clay Statues

In art we used clay to create our statues in the style of Henry Moore. We worked really hard to manipulate the clay and attach each body part in the correct position. Well done year 2!

Measuring Mass with Scales

In Maths, we have began to learn about Mass. Today we learnt about scales and how when they are balanced we are able to work out the weight. We compared using language such as heavier than and lighter than.

Art-Inside and outside spaces!

We discussed the work of the famous sculptor Barbara Hepworth. We learnt that she created sculptures with inside and outside spaces. She created sculptures that are like some natural objects which have different shapes, patterns, textures and colours on the inside. We understand that the inside of objects like these sculptures can look completely different to their outsides. We created our own sculptures using clay and tools to create different textures in the style of Barbara Hepworth with an inside and an outside space. Finally we painted our sculptures using two different colours to represent our inside and outside spaces.

Take a look at our fantastic models. Well done Year 2!!
