Year 3 Summer 2022-23
Cinnamon
We have begun our literacy unit by looking at different parts of our new story “Cinnamon”. In pairs we spoke about what was happening in the picture, what has happened before and what we think was going to happen. We all came up with fantastic ideas and could not predict the ending when we listened to the story.
Visit from the Dental Nurse
Today we are were visited by Michelle from the NHS. She told us all about her role. She then told us how to keep our diets heathy and why this is important. We then talked about the different teeth and their function. We then talked about what food are healthy and unhealth for our teeth and thought about what would happen to our teeth if we had an unhealthy diet. This led to think about our oral hygiene routine. We talked about our routines and how to help to protect our teeth with regular visits to the dentist.
Magnetic and Non Magnetic
Today in our science learning we have been investigating magnets. We have been learning about a magnet, north and south poles and how they are attracted to some metals. We then went around the classroom and explored different materials to see if they are magnetic or non magnetic.
Lifestyle and Fitness
e have been working with Brian from Sunderland's Change for Life today. They spoke to us about how we can keep our bodies healthy. We looked at different activities we could try. We also looked at the amount of sugar that are in different foods we eat. We all got a surpise.
Year 3 Visit the Discovery Museum
Year 3 enjoyed visiting the Discovery Museum in Newcastle. They learnt lots of different reactions, facts and events in history at Professor Pumpernickel's Science Show. There was smoke rings, bangs and lots of fizzing. They then enjoyed looking around the museum at the different exhibitions. They looked at local history about the development of Newcastle, the river Tyne and machinery before ending their day with some fun science.

Food Hygiene
Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a visit from Miss Clarke who told us all about Food Hygiene based on her experience working at Sainsburys. We learnt about the importance of washing our hands thoroughly and using different utensils and kitchen ware to avoid food contamination. At the end we completed a quiz to check what we had learnt. We all passed with flying colours and were awarded with certificates!

Food Preparation
In preparation for Blackfell Pop 'N' Stop, we used the knowledge from our food hygiene course to make all of our different afternoon tea items. We all worked together and had lots of fun getting everything ready!
Jungle Book
It has been a wild day today in Blackfell! All of the children enjoyed the production of The Jungle Book. It was fantastic and all of the children enjoyed their panto. Year 3 were very lucky. After the show they got to meet the cast and learn about how the production was created from the scenes, to the costumes then the lightening and sound effects. We practise some drama skills to create a scary character then had a question and answer session with the actors.
Friction Investigation
Year 3 have been investigating friction in their science learning. They know that friction can effect the movement of an object. In groups, we created a ramp, measuring area and talked about how we make our experiment a fair test. They then investigating by putting different textures on the ramp. We learnt that the smoother the surface the more further the car travelled so less friction.
Be Safe, Be Fit, Be Healthy Week
Curling and Archery
Year 3 have been trying out some new sports today. They have been learning the skills of archery and curling. They had so much fun practising. They then had a whole class tournament in both of the sports. They look forward to trying more different sports this week.
Performance Poetry
Year 3 have been exploring the poem “Excuses for Mum”. First of all we read it as a class and discussed who the reader was and how they would be feeling. We then recited the poem and added expression. Finally we added actions and performed the poem to our friends.

Planning and Research
We have been looking at the different roles working with food/ We done some research learning about the all, from the farmer and fishermen to chef and restaurant managers. We are looking forward to learning more and creating our own café.

Taste Testing
In preparation of opening 'Blackfell Pop 'N' Stop', we tested a range of foods from breads, cheeses, scones and cakes to different flavoured juices. We wanted to investigate which items had the best flavours and worked well together. Everyone was very brave to try some new tastes and flavours.

Blackfell Pop 'N' Stop
What an incredible effort from all of Year 3 and 4 to pull off such a successful pop-up café for their family and friends! Mrs Milne and Mrs Agar are incredibly proud of all your hard work and determination. You all came together brilliantly as a team and made an outstanding profit of £700! Thank you to everyone from across school and the Washington community who helped support the children with this mini business venture!
Cinnamon Drama
We have been continuing to look at our story “Cinnamon” Today we read the text again and discussed the key events in the story. We then worked together, in small groups, to create a freeze frame for each of the key events in the story.
Coronation Celebrations
Year 3 enjoyed their coronation celebration day. They all came in dressed in the colours red, white and blue. They took part in a variety of activities throughout the day. They learnt all about the royal family and created a family tree, they then learnt more about King Charles and created a fact file. They learnt about the different coronation treasures and their meaning and created their own crown collage and posters for their windows at home. We can not wait to watch the coronation. Congratulation King Charles II.
Joseph Coelho
We have begun our Poetry unit in literacy. We looked at a picture of Joseph Coelho and made a guess to who we think he was. We then listened to some of this poetry and created a fact file using the chrome book to help us find him. We are looking forward to listening to more of his poems.
Sports Day
Year 3 had a fantastic afternoon at their Sports Day. They all enjoyed taking part in a variety of races for points for the house team. The races included egg and spoon, vortex throw, skipping race, dribble shoot out and long jump. We ended our sports day with a sprint. Well done to Willow who came first.
Year 3 Circuit Training
Year 3 have had a fantastic afternoon. They have been learning about the benefits of exercise and how it affects their body. In groups, they created a five movements to exercise the different parts of their body. They then picked music to motivate their friends and performed their routine for others to follow. There was a lot of red faces.
Fire Service
We enjoyed a visit from Mr Clark and his fire engine. We learnt all about what the fire service do and how they support the community. We all enjoyed taking turns using the hose and sitting in the cabin. Thank you Mr Clark.
Scramble
Year 3 took part in the Blackfell Scramble. There was a variety of activities for us to complete including vortex throw, walking through tyres, football shoot out, and our very favourite activity...the slip and slide! We got very wet and had lots of fun. Thank you to Year 6 for organising the event.
Bowling Fun
Year 3 and 4 have had a fantastic day bowling. They used the money raised from Pop 'N' Stop and went for a game of bowling and lunch. They even had enough change to have some time in the arcade. Well done Year 3 and 4!
