Year 5 Autumn 2020-21

Mysterious Mayans

It has been a pleasure to see the children back at school and hear about their Summer. Thank you to all parents/carers who have supported children with their holiday homework. It has been lovely learning more about the children and seeing their research, models and facts about the Mayans. Children shared their learning confidently.

Athletics

In P.E. we have been working on our athletics skills. To start off we looked at running and came up with some different styles of running. Next we practised our throwing to see how far we could throw it. We finished with some target practise.

Black History Month - The Windrush

To kickstart Black History Month, Year 5 had a really interesting morning learning about the Windrush generation. We met 'Winnie' who arrived on the Windrush from Dominica. It was interesting learning about the experiences she had and we created some excellent pieces of writing.

What's the force?

In Science we have been learning about Forces. In this lesson, we investigated mass and weight. We learned that weight can change depending on gravity but that mass never changes. If we lived on the moon we would 'weigh' a lot less as there is less gravity and if we lived on Jupiter we would 'weigh' more as there is a stronger pull of gravity.

Anti-bullying Week

We had a busy week for Anti-bullying week. We celebrated how we are all unique by designing our own odd socks. Also we learned about the different roles played when bullying happens.  We don't want to be a bystander, we want to be a defender. As well as this we had a visit from Northumbria Police to talk about balanced and unbalanced friendships.

Christmas Lunch

Year 5 enjoyed joining together for a festive lunch in the hall. We really enjoyed chatting over Christmas dinner, pulling crackers and telling jokes. We are very excited for Christmas day with our families now.

Self Portraits

Year 5 enjoyed learning about symmetry and practising symmetry using our faces. We had to make sure we sketched the correct size and shape before trying to match colours to our hair and skin tone. We noticed that some of our features are not always symmetrical such as our hair style.

Livin' on a Prayer

In Music we have begun to learn about Bon Jovi. This week we started off by listening to and appraising the song 'Livin' on a Prayer' and then we completed a fact file on him using the Chromebooks to help us research information.

What's in our Solar System?

As part of our Science topic - Earth and Space - we looked at the other planets in our solar system. We enjoyed learning a song about them. In groups we researched a planet each and produced fantastic information pages which are displayed in our class book. We are very proud of the work we produced.

Dance, dance, dance!

In preparation for Christmas, we have been learning a dance to a Christmas song. We have been learning our routine and we have been practising getting into character. It is a lot of fun and we can't wait for our parents/carers to see the finished dance.

Santa Run

Year 5 were excellent at supporting Santa with his half marathon. They looked very festive with their accessories and all put in an excellent effort helping Santa tick 3 miles off his total. Everybody completed at least 1 mile with some joining Santa for a second mile. Well done Year 5!

Party time

What a great time we had at our Christmas Party. It was lovely to see all the children dressed in their party clothes. We enjoyed dancing, playing party games and eating party food.

Still life drawing

In Art we have begun our learning about 'Objects and Meaning'. We started off looking at 'still life' and practised creating some still life drawings with a partner. The challenge was to draw half each so that when both pieces were joined together, it looked like one complete drawing. Some were very accurate and we really enjoyed this activity.

Finding the Pulse

This week in Music, we were finding the pulse in the piece of music we have been studying -  Livin' on a Prayer. We used different body parts to find the pulse and were able to find the pulse in music with both a slow and a fast tempo.

Black History Month - Harriet Tubman

We enjoyed continuing our learning about Black History by learning about a famous abolitionist called Harriet Tubman. We learned about slavery and how Harriet was born into this. We found out more about the 'underground railroad' and the part Harriet played fighting for the rights of both black people and women.

Sparkle, Jolly, Twinkle, Jingley!

We loved dressing up and performing the Christmas dance to the song from Elf the musical. We hope all our families enjoyed watching it. After we had recorded it, we enjoyed making up our own repetitive dance to 'I want a hippopotamus for Christmas!'

We all need help sometimes!

Sara from the Autism Outreach Team came to talk to us. She asked us to think about people who may need help sometimes. We realised that everyone needs help at times and not just people with disabilities. She taught us a little bit about Autism and things that autistic children might find difficult. It was very useful.
