RNLI Visit

We were joined about the Royal National Lifeguard Institution, they reminded us about safety near water. We discussed the different meaning of flags and how they can help us to stay safe. We then found out about riptides and the best way to react in this situation.

Internet Safety Day

During safer internet day (Tuesday 11th February 2020), Year 6 explored what a bystander is and the role they play within cyber bullying. We looked at becoming ‘upstanders’ and turning negatives into positives. Our local community policy supported with safety and offered advice during an assembly on the afternoon.

Safety Works

Year 6 visited Safety Works on Tuesday 10th March, they had a brilliant time and learnt about how to stay safe in the community. They took part in 5 different workshops where they found out about fire safety including hoax calls; first aid training where they learnt the recovery position; metro safety including where to stand when waiting for a train to arrive; road safety which covered using a pedestrian crossing and how to make the right choices when under peer pressure. Children had a great time and will discuss what they have learnt during their PSHEC lessons in the following weeks.

P.E- Flight

In P.E, we have been covering gymnastics. We have completed balances and partner balances and have moved on to thinking about flight during gymnastic floor routines and ways we could dismount different apparatus. We have thought about take off and landing and discussed how we could change our body shape during flight.

Inheritance. Acquired or Genetic!

In Science we have started our new unit: Inheritance and Evolution. We started by exploring what inheritance is and how offspring have some traits/characteristics similar to their parents. We thought about what characteristics we inherited and then moved on to create our own little Miss and Mr Men. Finally we considered whether characteristics are scientifically inherited or acquired through experiences we have had.

Whose book shelf is that?

Children participated in a challenge of working out which member of staff read which books. There were some clues to help along the way. It was really lovely to share our interest of books as adults with the children.

Science Week: Berocca investigation

In preparation for Science week Year 6 used their investigation skills to find out more about the reactions involve in Berocca. The children decided on their own key questions and independently planned it out in groups. We ensured it was a fair test, with one variable and many constants. The children then carried out their investigation and recorded their findings in a range of ways. All their work was then presented in our new Science floor book which we look forward to adding to during our Science units.

Science- Spectrum of Light

In Science this half term, our unit is Light. We have started the unit by discussing different light sources and finding out the light travels in straight lines. We have then explored the dispersion of light and how white light is made up of many different colours. This lead us on to understanding how we are able to see colour.

Gymnastics: Flight using equipment.

Our final lesson of our gymnastic unit involved us using equipment to take our flight movements one step further. We discussed how to keep safe on the equipment and the importance of team work and spotters. We then took to the different equipment and worked both individually and in groups to create mini routines when using the equipment.
