RNLI visit

The lifeguards from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution came to speak to us about being safe near water. We learned about checking to see if the beach was safe to be on, beaches where lifeguards patrolled, the flags and what they meant and we practised floating if we got into danger. Floating preserves energy until help would reach us.

Finding the pulse

This week in music we were finding the pulse in the piece of music we have been studying - The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. We used different parts of our body to find the pulse and we were able to find the pulse in music with a fast and slow tempo.

Safer Internet Day - Avatars

On Safer Internet Day, Year 5 looked at keeping their identities safe online. We talked about the importance of this and they created an avatar that they could use to keep their identities safe and the importance of not having real photographs of themselves or using school uniform that could identify their location.

Let's Dance!

Our new P.E. topic is dance. We started off by warming up to some of our favourite tracks then we learned some new dance moves. After that we learned about counts of 8 and created our own warm up dances to 'Can't Stop the Feeling' from the movie Trolls. We all really enjoyed ourselves.

Budgeting for a holiday

In maths we have been learning about calculation methods. To put them to the test, and into a real life situation, Miss Kitchen gave us a budget of £300 to plan a holiday to Thorpe Park. We had to work out money spent on rides, refreshments and games for each day. Then we had to work out how much money we had left each day to make sure we didn't overspend! Some of us used exactly £300!

Song time!

In French we learned the names of body parts. In order to help us remember them we practised the French song - Tete, epaule, genou, pied (Head, shoulders, knees and toes). We enjoyed joining in with the actions as well.

Safer Internet Day - Appropriate Comments

Year 5 also had a visit from Northumbria Police who taught them more about how to keep themselves safe online. They looked at the types of comments that they could receive from live streaming and decided on the best type of action to take based upon whether they knew the person or not.

World Book Day

For World Book Day, we dressed up as characters from books and created book characters out of potatoes. The entries and costumes were fantastic. Well done to Lyta and Lily who won the potato competition. We also took part in a teacher 'shelfie' quiz where we had to guess the teacher from their book shelf as well as taking part in a book swap. Well done to Beaux and Lily who won the teacher 'shelfie' quiz.

Partner Balances

In gymnastics we have been looking at balances. We have practised supporting partner balances and individual balances. We also looked at symmetrical and asymmetrical balances and created a routine. This week we thought about how we could incorporate the gymnastics equipment into our balances. It was interesting and fun to use equipment as part of our routine.

Persuasive Brochures

In literacy we have been learning how to persuade. We looked at how emotive language, rhetorical questions, personal pronouns and statistics were used effectively and wrote our own brochure persuading people to visit Disneyland Paris.

British Science Week - Skittles vs M&Ms

Year 5 kicked off British Science Week in style with an investigation into Skittles and M&Ms. We had to decide what we wanted to find out, how we would keep it a fair test, make predictions and observations and draw conclusions. Some of us tested water temperature, some looked to see if the colour would combine to make new colours and some compared how quickly the colours ran. It was fascinating to watch.
