Year 3 Autumn 2019-20

Coming soon...

First Week Back

In our first week back to school, we took part in many different activities. We started to learn how to play hockey, we created passports into year 3 and so much more! We had a great time discussing what year 3 would be like and we felt much more at ease after this.

D.T - Investigating Pencil Cases

In our D.T lesson we started off investigating different pencil cases. We looked at what they looked like, how they fastened, the material used and the practicality of it.

History - Neolithic Period

In history, we have been learning about the different periods that made up The Stone Age. This lesson was based on the Neolithic period and the children had to go on a hunt around the classroom to find answers to different questions. This research helped them to develop their understanding of this period.

Science - Natural And Man-Made Rocks

We have been looking at different types of rocks in Science. In this lesson, we had to sort rocks into different groups. Once we did this, we grouped them into man-made and natural rocks.

Computing - Are All Websites Trustworthy?

During our computing lesson, we looked at the possibility that not all websites are real and trustworthy. After we had a discussion, we looked at a website and found ways why this website may be a fake website. We came up with ideas such as: there was spelling mistakes, there was missing punctuation, the pictures were photoshopped and it did not make sense. After this, we then created our own 'spoof' websites to show that anyone is able to make a website and what we read may not be true.

Instructions - Making A Hat

In literacy, we have been learning about instructions. We spent some time looking at instructions and whether not we were able to follow  them. After that, we had a go at following a set of instructions and we managed to create our own hats.

Computing - Safety In Numbers

During our computing lesson, we started to look at Internet Safety. We logged on to the computer and created a mind map displaying different ways we needed to stay safe on the internet. We also discussed websites, apps and games where we could be safer if we were with an adult so they could see what we were accessing to ensure we were always safe.

Design and Technology

Our D.T topic this term is to research and create a pencil case. In this lesson, we looked at different pencil cases and talked about what they were made out of, their practicality, their design and who they were aimed at. We then drew the pencil cases we looked at and annotated each one describing what they were like.

Time To Sew

In DT, we have been learning all about pencil cases and our project is to make our own pencil cases. To do this, we needed to learn how to sew. We tried the running stitch and the whip stitch. We then discussed which we thought would be better to 'seal' to edges of the pencil case. We decided that the whip stitch was the stronger stitch, so we practised how to do it correctly.

Maths - Addition And Subtraction

We have been learning about addition and subtraction in maths. To support us with our work, we often make the lessons practical. We do this by using resources such as, Base 10. We were able to use the Base 10 to create a number. We then subtracted a number by removing Base 10 to find an answer or we added more to find a new total.

Science - Transparent, Translucent or Opaque

In science, we have been looking at light and shadow. In today's lesson, we looked at different objects to see if they were transparent, translucent or opaque. We used torches to see if the objects would allow light to shine through them fully, partially or not at all.

Literacy - Drama

In literacy, we performed as a group. We were all given a 'What If' question related to a well known Fairy Tale. We then had to act out our 'What If' scenario. We all had fun and enjoyed the acting side.

French ... Oh Là Là

In French, we have been conducting some research. We then discussed what a fact file was and how we could create one. After doing this, we had all the information we needed to be able to make our very own fact file.

QuickSticks Hockey

In P.E this half term, we have been learning about invasion games. The invasion game we delved into was Hockey. We looked at the rules, tactics, techniques and how to play the game. We all thoroughly enjoyed learning how to play hockey and it helped us when we participated in the QuickSticks Hockey festival at Oxclose Community Academy.

Guided Reading

Once a week, we conduct a Guided Reading lesson. This consists of a reading and a comprehension element. At the start of the lesson, children are asked to read aloud to their peers and teacher. Whilst they are reading, their teacher will ask them questions based on the text they have just read, to reinforce their understanding.  Once the teacher has read with the children, they will complete a comprehension task based on the section of the book they have just read.

Calendars

We have created a calendar based on the four seasons. We used different materials when decorating the trees. We did this so we had different textures. We feel they looked really effective and showed the effect the seasons have on the trees.
