Year 3 Spring Term 2018-19

A Roman Feast

To begin our topic, we had an afternoon learning about and trying different foods which the Romans would have eaten. We all enjoyed this and all discovered some items which we liked and some which we most definitely did not! In between courses, we discussed the different foods and whether the high and mighty would eat like us or the poor slaves.

Tennis - Do We Have The Next Wimbledon Champion Here?

We had the pleasure to have a specialist tennis coach from Sunderland Tennis Centre come into school and teach us some tennis skills. We have an upcoming tennis competition and we have started to learn different skills which will help us improve and give us the best chance possible at the competition. We all enjoyed the session and are looking forward to the rest of them!

Internet Safety Day

Year 3 have been looking at internet safety and also consent. We discussed what we thought consent meant and then created a post-it-note wall with all of the ideas we thought it meant. After that, we discussed the actual meaning of the word and spoke about what we thought it meant. Later in the lesson, we spent time drawing an apple and a dog. We did this to see if it was easy to draw these objects, and to see if there were similarities between our drawings. We were then given the task of drawing the internet. We found this very difficult as didn't know what the internet actually looked like. We discussed that the internet was such a broad topic and that we can find out almost anything on the internet. This led nicely into our practical activity. Mr Whitfield read out different scenarios and we had to go to different areas of the classroom which had different answers. We had to decide which answer would best fit the scenario. These were all liked to consent and what could happen if we did not give consent.

Statistics

We have been working on our statistics work in year 3. We have been learning about pictograms, tally charts and bar charts and how we can use these to interpret data. Once we understood statistics, we then conducted some of our own research and created our own pictograms, tally charts and bar charts based on the data we collected.

Wear Romans Trip

Year 3 enjoyed an action-packed day at Durham University. When we arrived, we met our guides who were very knowledgeable. They told us so many different facts about the Romans. They explained the Roman Province and how they were so good at attacking other tribes and conquering them.

We then became archeologists and handled lots of different items from Roman times. We then completed some work where we needed to draw, measure and answer questions based on the items we were looking at. After that, we went into the gallery and we had four different activities to complete. We had to look around the gallery and find information so we could answer questions that were in our booklets. We also had the chance to play a Roman game.

In the afternoon, we created some Roman Mosaics. We had to create our own designs before completing the final product. To end the day, we took part in some drama. We were asked to go up to the front and act out different scenarios. We even got to dress up like Roman Emperors!

Ducks... Ducks Everywhere

Year 3 were lucky enough to visit the ducks we have in Reception class. Everyone thought they were so cute and a few even came a way saying they wanted a pet duck!

Gymnastics

Year 3 enjoyed trying gymnastics for the first time this year. We learned what 'point and patch' balances were and how to start and finish a routine. Year 3 were put through their paces and they had to create a routine which included three, point balances and three patch balances.

Let It Snow...

Year 3 loved going out into the snow! We made Snowmen, Snow Angels and even threw snow balls at Mr Whitfield and Mr Taylor! :( It was so cold but extremely exciting!

My Roman Shield

We have been researching Roman shields in DT. We found that there are different styles, shapes and sizes of shields. We used this research to design our own Roman shield.

World Book Day!

The Sheep Pig

For World Book Day, Year 3 spent time taking part in many different activities. We looked at how we could change the front cover and blurb from our class text to make it more interesting. We then created a character description for one of the characters in the story. Our aim was to do this without actually saying the characters name. This was difficult but we managed to do it by using our description vocabulary. We then partnered up and completed a quiz based on our text. Some of the questions were tricky but we managed. Our winners received a bowling voucher for a free game if bowling.

Design and Technology - Roman Shields

We have completed our Roman Shields! They all look amazing and everyone tried very hard with this project. Well done year 3.

Roman Class Assembly

What a performance! So much hard work and effort went into this assembly by all of the children! You should all be so proud of yourselves because you were all brilliant.

Science - Locating bones in the body

We have been learning about bones in year 3 and we had a practical lesson where we had to draw around one of the group and then work together and write where in the body, these bones would be located.

Drama

This week, Year 3 spent time learning 'show don't tell'. We had to show our partner how we were feeling without speaking. We worked on showing different emotions to which our partners then created some sentences explaining exactly what they could see. This has really helped us to develop our descriptive writing.

Researching Boudicca And The Roman Army

In literacy, we have been learning about non chronological reports. We have linked this to our topic, The Romans and conducted some research about the Iceni Tribe and The Romans. We have discovered lots of important information which we will use in our reports.

Roman Roads Around The UK

We have spent time researching some of the roads which were built by the Romans. We then used an atlas to find out exactly where in the UK these roads were. Once we knew this, we marked these roads on to a map and colour coded them so we knew which road was which and to show how long each road was.

Our Very Own Roman Mosaics

We have been very artistic in Year 3 and we have created our own Roman Mosaics. We spent time planning the perfect design and we then had some practice attempts before completing our final design. We really enjoyed completing our artwork and they look fantastic.

Becoming Geographers

We used Ipads and spent time researching Italy. We looked at physical features such as rivers, mountains, and volcanoes. We also looked for man-made features such as the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pizza and the Trevi Fountain. We then thought about questions which we would like to find the answers to. We then used the Ipads to see if we could find the answers to our questions. Once we found the answers, we created a mind map with all the new information we had found.

Disco, Disco , Disco...

We all had a blast at our Spring Disco. There was some great dancing on display and by the end of the night some sweaty children!

Easter Egg Competition

This year our theme was 'space' and Year 3 created some wonderful Easter egg creations. Well done to our three winners!
