Year 6 Spring Term 2017-18

Snow Day!

We had a great time when it snowed last week. At playtime we had a little longer than usual to play on the field with our friends. Some of us had snowball fights, some built snowmen and others built a snow cat. It was fun while it lasted but we were glad to get rid of the ice when the snow had gone.

Professor Nitrate

To kick off British Science week, we had a visit from Professor Nitrate who did a 'Silly Science' workshop. She taught us all about chemical reactions, lift, air resistance and the fire triangle. It was so much fun and we all really enjoyed learning about science in this way.

Lava Lamps

Finally we went to work with Miss Hepplewhite. We mixed oil and water together and found they were polar to eachother so would not mix. Then we added food colouring which sunk to the bottom. Once we added a vitamin tablet, the coloured water started to fizz and rise above the oil to make a lava lamp effect.

Shoplifting Workshop

Year 6 had a really informative visit from Northumbria Police. They came to talk to us about shoplifting. We discussed why some people do it. We were interested to learn that you can be arrested for accompanying someone who is shoplifting. Now we feel strong enough to say no to peer pressure and make sensible choices.

Making Bath Bombs

As part of our Science week, we had a fun science morning where we tried different activities. First we made bath bombs that react when they meet water. The most difficult bit was trying to get the right consistency so it didn't fizz or crumble too much. We can't wait to try our bath bombs out.

Easter Egg Competition

There were some fantastic entries to the 'Tall Ships' Egg Competition this year! All of the entries looked like they had taken a lot of time and effort. Well done to our 3 winners, Holly Hall, Sarabjeet Bhamra and Benjamin Cook. They took home some well-deserved chocolate eggs to enjoy over Easter.

Safetyworks!

Safetyworks was a brilliant class visit! We learned about First Aid from St John Ambulance, Metro safety from Nexus, shoplifting from Northumbria Police, fire safety from Tyne and Wear Fire Service and road safety. It was set up like a small town and it was an excellent way to learn about safety. Thank you Safetyworks!

Volcanoes

With Miss Henderson we made erupting volcanoes. First we had to construct a volcano using dough then we had to put in our bicarbonate of soda. We added food colouring and washing up liquid to make it look more like lava. When we added the vinegar, the eruptions were amazing.

World Book Day 2018

Our late World Book Day celebrations were a big success. We had fun sharing stories with younger children in our pyjamas/onesies and listening to traditional tales told to us by different teachers while we had a drink and some cookies. The bedtime stories winner from our class was Tom, well done Tom!
