Year 3 Autumn Term 2017-18

Coming soon...

New Beginnings

Today we have been problem solving different situations we might come across in our new class. We worked in small groups with our friends and were given a problem we might come across in school. We then created a freeze frame to represent it. We worked together to discuss what we would do in this situation and created another freeze frame to show the solution to the problem. We enjoyed creating freeze frames and think we are well prepared for an exciting year in our new class.

Fables

In literacy we have been learning about fables. We read a variety of fables and discovered that all fables have a moral and identified the important morals within each short story we read. To help us better understand the characters and their traits we created some drama performances based on different fables. After creating the performances we shared them with the rest of the class and discussed the characters within the story. Explaining what we thought the characters might be thinking and feeling at different stages of the fable. We really enjoyed creating freeze frames and have a great understanding of fables.

Animals including Humans

In year 3 we have learning about the human body. Today we focused on the human skeleton. We learnt the names of different bones and labelled parts of the skeleton. We discussed and made comparisons between the human skeleton and animal skeletons. It was  lots of fun.

Using Our Senses

Today, in literacy we were describing the circus. We set up our classroom like a circus and used our senses to describe what we could hear, see, smell, touch and taste. We wrote down our ideas on post-it notes and stuck them to our senses cards which were spread around our classroom. We then went back around the room to improve the sentences on the post-its using prepositions, adverbs and adjectives. We all had a great time and created some fantastic complex sentences. We will use these tomorrow to write our setting description.

Children in Need Disco

We had a School Disco to help raise money and awareness for Children in Need. We came to school in non-uniform and enjoyed some lovely cakes at the bake sale. We had loads of fun playing dancing games and competitions at the disco and even had our teachers up dancing!

We Love to PARTY!

In Year 3 and 4 we love to party. We came together and celebrated Christmas and the end of our first term in our new classes. We enjoyed playing some traditional party games, like corners and musical statues, and also enjoyed some new games like nibble the biscuit. We all had a fantastic time spending time with our friends and having fun.

The Romans

We have had a fantastic start to our topic of The Romans this term. We created some wonderful, imaginative and informative pieces of homework in the summer holidays to help introduce us to our great topic for Autumn Term. We made shields and Roman armour, art work, timelines, PowerPoint presentations and much more. We shared all we have learnt so far with the rest of the class and can't wait to discover more. Great Work Year 3.

Place Value

Year 3, have been learning about place value in three digit numbers. To support our understanding we used base ten equipment and value counters to identify the value in digits. After we identified the value of digits within different numbers, we used this knowledge to put numbers in order from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. We made comparisons about the numbers and discussed our methods to order numbers. We all did a fantastic job and Miss Clennell was very impressed with how well we understand three digit numbers.

Oxclose Church - Signs and Symbols

In Religious Education, we have been learning about the Christian Faith and looking closely at the meaning of the different signs and symbols of Christianity. To help us better understand some of the symbols, we visited Cannon Hopper at Oxclose Church, where he explained these to us in more detail. We explored the church looking for as many different signs and symbols as we could find and then asked questions about them. We also really enjoyed singing some of our favourite Hymns.

Science - Exploring Forces

In science, we have been exploring forces and how they work. We carried out an experiment to see which surfaces our vehicles would move most easily across. We wanted to find a surface, which needed less force to make our Roman Chariot Race course. We discovered that the wood flooring and the Lino needed less forces to move the vehicles and the grass needed the most force. We all had a great morning and enjoyed exploring forces.

A Roman Dance

Our P.E. unit this half term has been dance which we have liked to our Romans topic. We have learnt and performed a Roman Dance based on music and dances from Ancient Rome. We used scarves as props and worked as a team to perfect our dance routine. We learnt about posture and developed new techniques and skills. Miss Clennell was really impressed with the final performance as we worked together fantastically.

Quicksticks

In PE we have been learning how to control and move balls using hockey sticks. Year 3 will be taking part in a Quicksticks tournament later this term and have made some great progress in controlling the ball and improving their skills. We can't wait to take part in the tournament.

'Leon and the Place Between'

In literacy we have been reading the magical story of 'Leon and the Place Between'. After reading it we sequences the main events into some drama performances. We discussed the characters' thoughts and feelings and shared our own interpretations of the story.

Wear Romans

We had a fantastic day today with our visitor from Durham Outreach. We have learnt so much more about the Romans and have some amazing facts to share. Using a timeline we discovered when the Romans invaded Britain and learnt about the Roman Army. We explored real Roman artefacts, which are thousands of years old and made some great suggestions about what the objects would have been used for. We created some impressive Roman mosaic art and became a Roman ourselves. We had Roman names, jobs and lives, and even got to try on a soldiers outfit. We all thought it was really heavy. Thank you Durham Outreach! We learnt so much and had a brilliant day!

Anti-Bullying Week

During Anti-Bullying Week, year 3 have been discussing ideas and sharing thoughts about how we can all be better friends to our peers. We have created a poster for our school which shows how we can work together to prevent bullying. We also created our very own Superhero masks and decided what powers and characteristics our superhero would have to help stop bullying from happening. Year 3, shared some very thoughtful ideas and we have all made a promise to be a good friend to one another.

Bethlehem the Musical

The West End came to Blackfell when the children of Year 3 and 4 performed their Christmas Play. All children took part in Bethlehem the Musical! It was a retelling of the Nativity through singing and acting. Everyone made us so proud with their performing arts skills. Year 3 and 4 you were AMAZING! Well Done!
