Year 1 Autumn Term 2018-19
Our First Day in Year 1!
Welcome to Year 1! We had a brilliant first day in Year 1 and were thrilled to see all of our friends again after the summer break. We are looking forward to seeing what exciting things are in store for us this year.
Computing
During our computing lessons this half term, we have learnt how to turn a computer on and how to log in. We have been able to navigate our way through the program Purple Mash, where we learnt how to take ownership of our work by saving and opening files.
3D Shape Hunt
This week we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes in maths. We have learnt to recognise and name shapes, as well as sort them by their properties. We particularly enjoyed becoming shape detectives for our shape hunt around school. We worked together to identify everyday objects and their shapes. We were very good at spotting them and had lots of fun too!
Anti-Bullying Week
The theme for this year's Anti-Bullying Week was 'Respect'. Year 1 discussed the meaning and importance of having respect for one another both within and outside of school. We created posters in ICT which described how to be a good friend and then discussed our posters as a group. We also wrote kind messages for our class mates and explained how it feels when someone says something nice about us. Finally, we completed a piece of writing describing how our friends have shown us respect in school.
The Inn-Spectors
What a brilliant performance KS1 put on for family members this week! After many days of rehearsing, their hard work and perseverance payed off. They sang and spoke with great confidence and made everyone very proud.
New Beginnings Homework
Our homework for the summer break was to create a presentation about ourselves. We came up with very creative ways to present our work, including posters, booklets and drawings. We thoroughly enjoyed sharing facts about ourselves and we learnt a lot about our friends too.
Music
This half term in music we have been practicing our song Hey You! We have learnt to find the pulse, rhythm and pitch whilst listening to the song. We have also learnt the names of various musical instruments and have used them to perform the full song.
Remembrance Assembly
To mark 100 years since the end of World War 1, we commemorated this event by holding a whole school remembrance assembly. As part of this assembly, we performed a short play explaining the meaning of wearing a poppy. We have practiced very hard over the past couple of weeks and our hard work and persistence definitely payed off on the day! The play taught us a lot about World War 1 and the importance of remembering those who lost their lives.
RNLI
Key Stage 1 took part in a workshop with two lifeguards from the RNLI. They discussed water safety and what to do if they found themselves or others in difficulty around water. Thank you for visiting us!
Christmas Party
Year 1 & 2 had a fantastic time at their Christmas party! They had lots of fun playing Musical Statues, Wrap the Christmas Tree and Christmas Corners. They also enjoyed working as a team to complete a Christmas quiz and danced until their feet hurt.
Gymnastics in P.E.
This half term in P.E. we have been learning to perform basic gymnastic skills. We have learnt how to use equipment safely and how to travel in a variety of ways. We were also able to make a sequence of movements and share it with the rest of the class.
Drama in Literacy
This half term we have been discussing what we know about fairy tale stories. We named some of our favourite fairy tales and listened to the story The Frog Prince. After listening to the story, we discussed the main events and then had fun dressing up and acting them out in groups. By the end of the lesson, we were confident retelling the story.
Church Visit
This term in R.E. we have been learning about the faith Christianity. As part of our lesson, we visited Oxclose Church to learn about the features of a church and ask the questions that we had thought of in our previous lessons. We were greeted by Canon Hopper who gave us a mini tour of the church, answered our questions and introduced us to many songs. We had lots of fun at the church and have learnt a lot from this experience.
Visit to Newcastle Castle
What a fun-filled day we have had visiting Newcastle Castle as part of our topic 'Queen and Country'! We started the day off with a very interesting tour of the Black Gate and the castle keep. We learnt about what life was like living in a castle during the Middle Ages. We became the 'Blackfell Barbarians' in an attempt to break down the portcullis and enter the castle. Then we explored the dungeons which held prisoners hostage. We also climbed to the very top of the castle keep which overlooked Newcastle and Gateshead. After lunch, we took part in a 'knight training workshop' and had the opportunity to explore armour and practice our sword and shield skills.
