Year 5 Science Week

12 March 2024 (by C Taylor (ctaylor))

This week it's British Science Week and this year the theme is 'Time'. In year 5 we have thought about the concept of time and, although it is difficult to define, it is all around us. We linked this to our work earlier in the year on Earth and Space and talked about where different times come from e.g. 24 hours in a day, 365 days in a year. During the lesson, we discussed different jobs related to science and the children found it interesting that, other than becoming a scientist there, are lots of other careers that use science e.g. nurse, astronomer, vet. However the best part of the day was making water clocks. The children used old pop bottles and poured water through a hole in the top. Using a black pen, they marked one minute intervals at the level of water up to 10 minutes. Now that the bottles are empty they can be filled with water again and the intervals used to measure the time.
