Getting to Know You Bingo!

On our first day, we found out more about one another through a game of bingo. Children found both similarities and differences to one another.

P.E- Circus Dancing

In P.E we are putting together our own dances linked to the circus and circus music. We have explored different performers and what kind of movements they would make. We are now thinking about a beat of 8 and putting this into a short routine to fit the music.

Literacy- Rapunzel

In Literacy, we are learning about the fairy-tale Rapunzel. In this session we acted out frieze frames to the key events. We are then going to put this together into our own comic strip to help us plan our re-telling.

Sharing our Rapunzel stories with

Reception and Nursery

After completing our own Rapunzel stories we shared them with Reception children. We thought about how to change our voices to make sure we told the story well! Your books are fantastic year 2- well done!

Black History Month

We were introduced to Claudia Jones and learnt about her life. We then discussed how she protested for her beliefs to make others listen. We discussed what her key messages are and what they should be now! We designed and made some of our posters for protest. After finding out about Claudia Jones and her beliefs, we went on to find out about how she founded Notting Hill Carnival. We then designed some of our own bright masks and head pieces. We discussed why they were so colourful, we agreed it was to celebrate different cultures, especially the Caribbean culture which Claudia represented in the very first Carnival back in 1959.

P.E- Skipping

Year 2 had great fun in their new P.E unit, fitness. Today's session was all about skipping and timing our jumps. As the session developed many of us found a rhythm whilst jumping. Lot's of us are going to keep practicing this too! Well done Year 2.

DT - How can we use scissors to cut materials safely?

Today we discussed how to use scissors safely and accurately. We discussed, how we should hold scissors, always cut materials in the direction away from our bodies, what we should and should not do whilst using scissors e.g. run, always concentrate on what you are doing and hand over scissors correctly. We practiced cutting straight lines, wavy lines and zig zag lines. We then cut out shapes to either assemble a Christmas tree or a snowman. We cut out the shapes as accurately as we could following the safety rules. Well done Year 2!

DT - How can we practise our sewing skills?

We looked at two different types of stitches e.g: running stitch and overstitch. We all had a go at threading a needle and tried hard to do a running stitch, going in and over the holes in the material. Next we had a go at attaching a button securely to the material. We found this really hard but we were determined to keep trying. We know all of these skills will help us to create our own Christmas decoration.

Well done Year 2!

Christmas Dinner and Jumper Day

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas Dinner. Thank you to the cooks- it was delicious!

Growing Daffodils

In PSHE, we talked about our strengths but also what we would like to grow and get better at. We then planted our daffodils to watch grow during the year, just like we would!

Science- Materials and their properties

In Science, we are learning about materials. In our first session we went on a material hunt to find objects that matched our properties. Well done Year 2!

PSHE- Good Choices

We have been reviewing our golden rules and rules in the classroom. We thought about which behaviours were good choices and those which could be improved.

What makes a good friend?

In PSHE we have been talking about what makes a good friend. We talked about friendly behaviours and then picked someone in our class who we think is a good friend and explained why.

Halloween Disco!

Year 2 had a brilliant time at the disco! They enjoyed dancing and playing games. Their outfits were very spooky! We hope all of the children who attended had a great time.

Children In Need

We have had a great day in school celebrating Children In Need in our Pudsey accessories. We talked about why we have Children In Need and how we are helping other children who may need support.

Letters to Santa

In Literacy, Year 2 have been learning about different sentence types. We put these to practice in writing our letters to Santa linked to our story: How to Catch Santa. We asked him questions, wrote some commands and even included an exclamation. We really hope he replies!

Nativity Play

Wow! What a fantastic performance Year 1 and 2 put on for their Christmas nativity! Fantastic singing and great acting throughout! Well done! We hope you all have a fantastic Christmas!

Christmas cards!

Year 2 really enjoyed creating their Christmas cards. They started by creating a wash background using water. They used dark blue to start and added white to create a shaded background from dark blue to light blue. They cut out templets of penquins or snowmen and decorated them using various materials. The cards look amazing and we hope everyone has a very happy Christmas! Well done Year 2 !

Maths- Making numbers

We have started place value in maths, we have been making lots of different numbers with a range of resources. Great job Year 2!

PSHE- Friendship Islands

As part of our PSHE this half term based on Friendships, we talked and explored a story all about how we can make friends. As groups, we designed our own friendship islands and thought about how they became friends on the island and formed friendships.

Art-Self Portraits

In Art, we are learning about self portraits. The class were asked to bring in objects that told us something about themselves. They worked in pairs to find out... Why their objects were special to them and what the objects told us about their personality. They took turns to use a digital camera to take a photo portrait of their partner.  In the next lesson they will answer questions related to their individual portrait to explain their reasons for choosing their objects, their pose and the reason for the location they chose.

Well done Year 2!

Our visit to the Discovery Museum

Year 2 have loved History this term, so far, they have found out lots about the Great Fire of London. They had a brilliant time at the Discovery Museum where they were able to find out about the Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle. They learnt about the key events and also what things were like during the Victorian era when the Great fire of Gateshead and Newcastle occurred. They also explore the Science Maze and experimented with forces, light, materials and gravity!

Painting Portraits

In Art, we have finished off our portrait unit by painting our own portraits with a colour, using our selected colour we worked on tone using white or black to lighten or darken the colour. We chose our colour based on our feelings or on which colour we think presented us.

DT - What is a decoration?

We discussed...What is a decoration? Where we might see them? When would we use them? Why would we use them? In groups we sorted the decorations by what materials they were made from, what shape they were, how colourful (from the least colourful to the most colourful) and from the least to most festive (Christmassy). We thought about how it stays on the tree and the materials you could use to hang them. We explained why we liked them or did not like them and why?

Science: meeting baby Alayah

As part of our Science learning about how humans grow, we met baby Alayah (Amelia’s baby sister). We had lots of questions to ask Mum about her. Our questions were:

What does she eat and drink? How much and how often?

Has she smiled or laughed yet?

How old is she? How tall is she? How heavy is she?

How do  you take care of the baby and know what she wants?

How much does she sleep?

What kind of toys does she play with?

Does she cry? Does she smile yet?

We found out lots of answers and even got to say a little hello!

DT - What is design criteria?

First we discussed the term 'design criteria'. We then selected the materials we wanted to use to decorate our bauble. After choosing our jewels and other materials. we arranged them on the table the way we wanted them to look on our bauble. We designed the front of the bauble then added a loop on the back of the bauble. We will use our planning to make the finished product then evaluate it. We also completed a worksheet to be clear about what tools and materials we needed to complete the finished product and what stitch we would be using. Finally we read each statement as a whole class and put the steps of creating a Christmas bauble in the correct sequence using numbers.

Well done Year 2 I think your finished baubles will look amazing!!
